The second North East India Film Festival (NEIFF) 2024, organized by THOUNA, Manipur in association with Film Forum Manipur & Directorate of Information & Public Relations, Government of Manipur and sponsored by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India and National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), successfully concluded at the Library & Information Centre in Kakching with cultural performances and an award ceremony.

In addition to celebrating Manipur’s rich cultural and cinematic heritage, the festival brought together eminent academics, artistes, filmmakers and cultural icons to showcase the power of cinema as a vehicle for social change, education, and cultural preservation while sharing the numerous narratives of Northeast India on a prestigious platform. The five-day event featured 28 films, with eight feature films and two non-feature films chosen for competition.

‘Where Is My Home’, jointly directed by the late Bhaskar Jyoti Das and Samiran Deka, and produced by Samiran Deka under the banner of Ssdeka Media Entertainment Pvt Ltd, was the recipient of the Best Non-Feature Film award at the 2nd North East India Film Festival, showcasing Samiran’s rapid ascent in the indie movie scene. Apart from ‘Where is My Home’, his other film, ‘Teens of 42’, was also screened at the festival. Both of these films have received praise for their creative storytelling and engaging narratives at several film festivals. The critical recognition solidifies Samiran Deka and Ssdeka Media Entertainment’s standing as significant forces behind the changing film landscape of Northeast India.

‘Where is My Home’ draws attention to the ongoing hardships faced by India’s displaced indigenous population. For the indigenous Bru (Reang) community, the concept of ‘home’ has been a distant dream for more than two decades. The film focuses on the 23-year ordeal of the Bru refugees, who were uprooted from Mizoram after ethnic conflicts in 1997. The documentary chronicles their struggles, tenacity and unwavering optimism as they endure life in relief camps throughout Tripura, yearning for a home of their own.

The festival’s Best Feature Film award went to the Manipuri feature ‘Oitharei’, produced by Gibanlata Thokchom and directed by Dinesh Naorem. The award for Best Director was bagged by Dhiraj Kashyap for the Assamese film ‘Amateurs’, the Best Screenplay award was won by Binoranjan Oinam for ‘Langdai Ama’ (Manipuri), while Joy Mekola took home the Best Cinematography award for ‘Oitharei’, Tarun Wang received the Best Editing award for ‘Laangoi’ and Debojit Gayan bagged the Best Sound Design award for ‘Baghjan’. The Special Jury Award was bagged by actor Narmada for the film ‘Sunita’, which also received the Jury’s Special Mention. ‘The Legacy of 4 Generations’ received the Special Mention in the Non-Feature Film category. The winners received trophies and cash prizes in addition to citations.

Comedian Samay Raina has become embroiled in a controversy stemming from his YouTube series, “India’s Got Latent.” Tensions rose when guest Ranveer Allahbadia posed an inappropriate question to a contestant, leading to significant public backlash. In the wake of the incident, Raina removed all episodes of the show from his channel and vowed to cooperate with ongoing investigations. The controversy has had tangible repercussions, with concerns about his future performances leading to show cancellations and potential police involvement to monitor for offensive content.

Amidst this turmoil, an earlier episode featuring actress Avika Gor has resurfaced, drawing unexpected attention. During Gor’s appearance, Raina humorously remarked on her role as the original Anandi in the beloved TV series “Balika Vadhu,” joking about her exit from the show, which elicited laughter from Gor. The festival will open with the Iranian film ‘In the Arms of the Tree’, directed by Babak Khajehpasha, setting an inspiring tone for the inaugural edition of GAFF. The closing film will be ‘My Melbourne’ by directors Imtiaz Ali, Rima Das, Onir and Kabir Khan.

GAFF 2025, organized by Trending Now Media, is dedicated to showcasing the dynamic and diverse storytelling traditions of Asia while placing a special spotlight on the rich and vibrant cinema of Assam and the North-East region.

The festival will feature a curated selection of over 200 feature films from across Asia, representing countries such as Iran, Nepal, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Azerbaijan, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Turkey. A special competitive section, exclusively for films from North-East India, will recognize outstanding achievements in categories including Best Film, Best Direction, and Best Performance, celebrating creativity, technical excellence, and storytelling.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Honorary Festival Director Monita Borgohain said: “GAFF 2025 is all set to be a vibrant celebration of Asia’s rich storytelling traditions. We are proud to present a thoughtfully curated lineup that promises to captivate audiences and inspire filmmakers. Every film has been carefully selected to offer a transformative cinematic journey, bridging cultures and sparking meaningful conversations.”

The three-day event will also host engaging panel discussions and workshops led by renowned filmmakers and industry experts, fostering meaningful dialogue and collaboration. It will provide opportunities for filmmakers, actors, and enthusiasts to network and explore future creative projects.

Urging the people of Guwahati to attend the festival, Honorary Programme Director Kishore Kumar Sarma, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for the cine-lovers to relish the finest cinematic masterpieces from across Asia. Enhancing the festival’s prestige, the internationally renowned Sri Lankan filmmaker Prasanna Vithanage will grace the event as a chief guest. Moreover, adding to the festival’s fame, renowned film critic and festival advisor Srinivasa Santhanam, National Award-winning film critic and filmmaker Utpal Borpujari, National Award-winning filmmaker Manju Borah, and prominent film critic, music journalist, and editor Dalton Christopher will be integral parts of the 1st GAFF.

Instituted in 2011 to honour the legacy of Pabitra Kumar Deka, the Roopkar Awards are presented biennially to individuals who have made significant contributions to cinema and cultural journalism. This year, the honours were presented by Chandan Chutia, a celebrated fine arts artist from the state.

Reflections on Roopkar and Its Founder

Upon receiving the award, Utpal Datta, known for his contributions to film criticism and his directorial debut By Lane 2, reflected on the influence of Pabitra Kumar Deka in nurturing young talent. “Despite being surrounded by many accomplished writers, Pabitra Kumar Deka always encouraged fresh voices like us to contribute to Roopkar magazine. Roopkar was more than just a publication; it was a school for cultural journalism,” Datta said. His debut film, inspired by Deka’s life and works, has earned acclaim at several international film festivals.

Sanjeev Hazorika, an acclaimed filmmaker and actor, also expressed his gratitude, reminiscing about how Deka’s encouragement led him to contribute to Roopkar. “His guidance was pivotal in shaping my journey,” Hazorika remarked.

Tributes and Anecdotes from Luminaries

The event, hosted by cine-journalist Bidyut Kumar Bhuyan, saw heartfelt tributes from prominent figures. Dilip Chandan, editor of Asam Bani and a well-known writer, recalled his early interactions with Pabitra Kumar Deka during his student days. “Meeting him was transformative for my career as a cine-journalist. My first novel, Majulit Atiya Gadhuli, was published in Roopkar,” he shared.

Mime artist Moinul Haque provided a lighter moment, recounting a humorous episode involving himself and late actor Jayanta Das seeking life advice from Deka. Nayan Prasad, a noted film critic, shared his memories of becoming acquainted with Deka and his subsequent foray into writing. Journalist Mrinal Kumar Bora reminisced that Deka’s encouragement gave him the confidence to connect with notable personalities in the field.

The intimate function was graced by several luminaries, including Rana Deka, Hemanta Kumar Das, Namrata Datta, Montu Saikia, Amardeep Gogoi, and Hemanta Debnath, among others. स्वर्गीय शुक्राचार्य राभा द्वारा 1998 में स्थापित, बाडुंगडुप्पा कलाकेंद्र कला और प्रकृति के सह-अस्तित्व में अग्रणी रहा है। साल वृक्षो के एक उपवन मे आयोजित यह फेस्टिवल अपने शून्य-कार्बन-फुटप्रिंट दृष्टिकोण के लिए जाना जाता है। बांस और पुआल की सीटिंग से लेकर माइक्रोफोन के बिना प्रदर्शन तक, इस आयोजन का हर पहलू स्थिरता के प्रति इसकी प्रतिबद्धता को दर्शाता है।

यह कार्यक्रम 15 दिसंबर को प्रसिद्ध चित्रकार रबीराम ब्रह्मा द्वारा उद्घाटन के साथ शुरू होगा, उसके बाद धनंजय राभा द्वारा निर्देशित और मदन राभा द्वारा लिखित ददन राजा (राभा) का प्रदर्शन होगा। दोपहर में, पाबित्र राभा द्वारा निर्देशित और दापोन द मिरर द्वारा प्रस्तुत मोंगली (बोडो) का मंचन किया जाएगा।

16 दिसंबर को चेन्नई के पर्च थिएटर के राजीव कृष्णन द्वारा निर्देशित तमिल नाटक किंधन चरितरम का मंचन किया जाएगा, उसके बाद कोलकाता के अनुचिंतन कला केंद्र के डॉ. गौरव दास द्वारा निर्देशित किशन राज (हिंदी) का मंचन किया जाएगा।

अंतिम दिन, 17 दिसंबर शुरू होगा राभा लोक प्रदर्शन के साथ और बाडुंगडुप्पा कलाकेंद्र की 25 साल की यात्रा पर विचार-विमर्श करने वाले एक खुले सत्र के साथ समाप्त होगा। प्रत्येक शाम के प्रदर्शन के बाद अलाव के चारों ओर चर्चा होगी, जिससे दर्शकों, कलाकारों और विद्वानों के बीच कलात्मक आदान-प्रदान को बढ़ावा मिलेगा।

Set in a tranquil Sal tree plantation, the festival is distinguished by its zero-carbon-footprint ethos, featuring bamboo and straw seating and performances without microphones, all underscoring its commitment to sustainability. This year, the festival’s theme centers on retrospection and shared memories, celebrating Badungduppa’s 25 years of theatrical innovation and experimentation. Managing Director Madan Rabha expressed gratitude for the journey, noting, “This 25-year journey has been one of challenges and triumphs. It is the love and support of our patrons that has kept us moving forward. We invite you to join us in commemorating this incredible voyage.” The festival will showcase plays in four languages, welcoming theatre groups from across India.

A special session will recount cherished memories of Badungduppa’s journey, with notable supporters present. The event kicks off on December 15 with an inauguration by renowned painter Rabiram Brahma, followed by the play Dadan Raja (Rabha), directed by Dhananjay Rabha and written by Madan Rabha. In the afternoon, Monglee (Bodo), directed by Pabitra Rabha and performed by Dapon the Mirror, will be featured. On December 16, the Tamil play Kindhan Charithiram, directed by Rajiv Krishnan of Perch Theatre, Chennai, will be staged, followed by Kisan Raj (Hindi), directed by Dr. Gaurav Das of Anuchintan Art Centre, Kolkata. The final day, December 17, will begin with a Rabha folk performance and conclude with an open session reflecting on the 25-year journey of Badungduppa Kalakendra. Each evening’s performances will be followed by discussions around a bonfire, fostering artistic exchange among audiences, artists, and scholars.

The festival also honors the pioneering concept of “Hygiene Theatre,” introduced by the late Sukracharjya Rabha, which blends art with sustainability. Over the years, the festival has hosted theatre groups from India and countries like South Korea, Brazil, Poland, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, achieving global acclaim. As part of its silver jubilee celebrations, Badungduppa Prakashan is set to release several publications documenting its extraordinary journey. Supported by the Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Government of Assam, IOCL, and Bongaigaon Refinery, the festival stands as a testament to the enduring power of art in preserving cultural heritage. President Cheena Rabha, Secretary Lakhikanta Rabha, and Managing Director Madan Rabha encourage theatre enthusiasts to take part in this milestone event and honor the legacy of the late Sukracharjya Rabha, who passed away in 2018.
