Khaali Peeli director Maqbool Khan reacts to the ‘goriya’ controversy! Here’s what he says

Ishaan Khatter and Ananya Panday starrer song Beyonse Sharma Jayegi from their upcoming film Khaali Peeli has become popular on social media for all the wrong reasons. The dance number came under the spotlight for its lyrics, as many claimed it had racist undertones.

Reacting to the controversy, the director of the film Maqbool Khan told BT, “The intention was never to hurt anybody’s sentiment. Which is why when a certain section of people got hurt, we apologised. It’s a creative job and different audience will see art with different perception. “It never occurred to us that ‘goriya’ as a word was addressing a girl’s skin colour. We thought with the word ‘goriya’ one is addressing a girl. There are so many Hindi songs like that… Goriya re goriya re mera dil chura ke le ja, Chura ke dil mera goriya chali, Gori tera gaon bada pyaara. In our song Ishaan’s character is comparing Ananya’s character’s lachak, thumke with Beyonce’s. He finds her dance moves so flawless ki woh kehta hai that Beyonce will also blush looking at ‘goriya’s’ moves. Anyway we have replaced the word with ‘Duniya’ and it fits right, bilkul bhi abrupt nahi lagta and it is going well with the lyrics.”

Earlier the song was titled Beyonce Sharma Jayegi, which was later changed to Beyonse Sharma Jayegi.
