Ending its wait, the new Assamese film Mahabahu — The Brahmaputra is arriving in theatres on September 11. Produced under the banner of Monarijit Entertainment in association with Louhitya Arts, the film is directed by Pranjal Pratim Chetia. Earlier, the film was scheduled to release on June 19, but its release date had to be postponed due to the flood situation in the state, alongside other reasons.
Regarding the film, director Pranjal Pratim Chetia shares, “The very name Mahabahu carries a sense of grand immensity. As a title, it evokes the Brahmaputra itself, immediately revealing the core essence of the film to the audience. It has been a challenging seven-year journey since we took the bold step of making a film centred around the Brahmaputra. Over these seven years, we witnessed numerous upheavals, from the COVID-19 pandemic to devastating floods. Now, in a swift turn of events, September 11 has been finalised as our release date.”
The film follows a scientific expedition as they journey down the mighty Brahmaputra River, capturing the profound challenges they encounter in the very heart of its unpredictable currents. The colossal river serves as a breathtaking yet unforgiving backdrop, testing the limits of human endurance against the raw power of nature. Parallelly, the narrative weaves in the devastating reality of floods. While the subject matter is quite complex, the film thoughtfully attempts to portray the essence of the Brahmaputra and the lives of the people residing along its banks. The story primarily unfolds with Sivasagar at its core.
Pranjal Pratim Chetia further added that the word Mahabahu is intrinsically linked to Sudhakantha Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. “The first public screening of our film was held on Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s birth anniversary. The film is also enriched by the vocals of Zubeen Garg. We have tried to craft this film in a fresh and distinctive style.”
Notably, the film is written and directed by Pranjal Pratim Chetia, who also portrays the lead character. Starring opposite him is actress Preety K Kongana in the female lead. The film features a talented ensemble of both experienced and emerging actors, including Jadumoni Dutta, Delhi’s NSD-trained theatre artiste Palash Pratim Mech, nationally recognised actor Sewan Singh Yein, Prayash (Kalpa), Gigi Prabhat Dutta, Diyashree and Pallavi Gohain Pathak.
Actress Preety K Kongana remarked about the film that the narrative of Mahabahu — The Brahmaputra encapsulates the monumental crises faced by the people of Assam, including recurring floods and other pressing regional issues. She added that audiences will see her in a completely distinct persona and expressed hope that viewers will appreciate the film.
Produced by Monuj Sangbun Phukon, the film features Pranjal Pratim Chetia as co-producer, Bidyut Konwar, Akash Duwori, and Hemanta Phukon as associate producers, with Samir Dutta serving as the executive producer. The music is composed by Shankuraj Konwar, Savvi Sabarwal, and Sukumar Dutta. The soundtrack boasts a stellar lineup of vocalists, including beloved heartthrob Zubeen Garg, Deeplina Deka, Shankuraj Konwar, Papori Gogoi, Simanta Shekhar, and Garima Kristy, while Sukumar Dutta composed the background score. The cinematography is handled by Ripu Kashyap and Raja Gogoi, with Taposh Phukan overseeing the editing. The film’s choreography is done by Ashim Gogoi and Pabitra Borah.
