The 83rd birth anniversary of noted Ramayani scholar, celebrated writer and Jnanpith awardee Dr Indira (Mamoni Raisom) Goswami was observed at Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir in Uzan Bazar on Friday. The event was organised by the South East Asia Ramayan Research Centre, which was established by Dr Goswami during her lifetime.

Retired Lieutenant General Rana Pratap Kalita attended as the chief guest, and former Tezpur University professor Dr Pradip Jyoti Mahanta was present as the guest of honour. Several distinguished personalities were also in attendance.

Addressing the gathering, Lt Gen Kalita said that whenever inequality emerges in society, whenever women struggle for their rights, and whenever intolerance threatens freedom of expression, the writings of Mamoni Raisom Goswami remind people of empathy. He said, “Mamoni Baideo showed everyone that literature is not only about the beauty of language but also the beauty of truth.”

Kalita said that “had Mamoni Baideo been alive, she would have spoken against the injustices witnessed today.” He said she would have reminded society that empathy is essential for civilisation to progress and equality is vital for peace. He added that her pen often became a weapon as she wrote fearlessly for society and urged all to carry forward her legacy.

Guest of honour Dr Mahanta said Mamoni Raisom Goswami dedicated her entire life to the pursuit of creation, which for her was a form of worship. Reflecting on her timeless novels and deep understanding of Ramayani literature, he said the message of peace and liberation within the Ramayani tradition may have inspired her, and she later explored that inspiration through her works. He said her novels portrayed people and society and celebrated life and humanity through pain and the dream of freedom.

He noted that the theme of women’s liberation also appears in her works, even though she never identified herself as a feminist writer. Dr Mahanta suggested that the South East Asia Ramayan Research Centre organise a two or three day discussion on her life and contributions.

The programme began with a mangalcharan by artiste Barnali Das, followed by lighting of the lamp before her portrait. A minute of silence was observed in memory of singer Zubeen Garg. Centre director Sabita Sharma delivered the welcome address and recalled key moments from the writer’s life.

Members of her family presented a group song, followed by a dance performance by artiste Namrata Goswami. Actor Zerifa Wahid recited two poems written by Dr Goswami . Sukanaya Kashyap Mahanta anchored the event, and Centre president Jyotirmoy Goswami offered the vote of thanks.

In a significant literary development, Roopkar Prakashan has recently released an Assamese rendition of the mythological tale centred on Lord Ram, titled ‘Ram Vijaya’, thereby making this enduring epic more accessible to Assamese readers. The text serves as a sacred devotional scripture that profoundly glorifies the life and divine leelas of Lord Shri Ram and Lord Vishnu, providing insights into their timeless virtues and teachings. It holds a profound meaning for those who follow the teachings of Shirdi Sai Baba as well. Baba himself would frequently urge His devotees to immerse themselves in its pages, a practice documented in the sacred ‘Sai Satcharita’. As the time drew near for His Mahasamadhi, Baba insisted on hearing the verses recited to Him, showcasing the deep spiritual importance it held in His eyes. This act of seeking solace in its words in His final days resonates loudly about the spiritual depth and value of this sacred text.

Pallabi Borah has skillfully translated the literary work ‘Ram Vijaya’ into the Assamese language, elevating it to an engaging piece of translated literature, which marks her debut as a translator. In addition to her translation work on various literary texts previously, Borah is also the publisher of the recently revived ‘Roopkar’ magazine which upholds its historical significance within the cultural and literary landscape of Assam.

With an exceptionally modest price of just ₹150, this enchanting book will be accessible throughout Assam, proudly distributed by the Assam Publishing Company, located in Panbazar, Guwahati-1. The captivating cover artwork has been skillfully crafted by the talented Dr. Sanjib Bora.

A recently released novel that has been creating considerable excitement among readers is ‘The Tents’, written by Assam’s renowned screenplay writer Ranjit Sarma. Sarma’s collaborations as a screenwriter with several other esteemed filmmakers have culminated in numerous critically acclaimed and award-winning films, including Bidyut Chakraborty’s ‘Rag-Birag’ and ‘Nisiddha Nadi’, Manju Bora’s ‘Baibhav’ and ‘Anya Ek Jatra’, Sanjeev Hazorika’s ‘Mimangsa’ as well as Hemanta Kumar Das’s ‘Othello’, among others. His intellectually stimulating works have solidified his status as a prominent screenwriter within the contemporary Assamese cinematic sphere. The event was attended by the author, Ranjit Sarma, along with distinguished guests, including the prominent writer and literary critic Bhaskar Phukan, noted quizzer Aparajita Lahkar, and Alex Thomas, a renowned social activist.

The central figure in the novel ‘The Tents’ is an Assamese Christian named Alex Goldsmith, who embarks on an odyssey alongside Suren Bora, a fervent extremist, and Mohini Thapa, Suren’s beloved, as Alex grapples with the heartache of India’s partition, while Suren passionately advocates for the dismantling of the state apparatus through a communist upheaval.

Destiny transforms Alex into the assassin of the special police squad leader, while Suren ascends to the role of deputy commander-in-chief of a rebel army; Mohini, a captive within the rebel camp, is compelled to assassinate Pallab Bhuyan, the commander-in-chief of the rebel forces, after Suren meets his demise at the hands of the rebels; lost in a haze of aimlessness, the rebels ultimately capitulate, and Alex heroically rescues Mohini from the chaos of the surrender ceremony.

During the function, Nupur Boruah extended felicitations to the guests, while Divik Bhattacharjee served as the master of ceremonies. Dilip Sarma, an economist and self-leadership mentor, provided a comprehensive and insightful evaluation of the book. He concluded his review by urging both Millennials and Generation Z to read the book in order to grasp Assam’s history during the insurgency era.

Roopkar, one of the earliest Assamese-language, tabloid-sized monthly magazines devoted to Assamese cinema, theatre, and culture, is poised to make a comeback. Founded in 1975 by the late Pabitra Kumar Deka, an eminent journalist and humorist, the magazine remained an important part of Assam’s cultural landscape until the early 1990s.

During its initial run, Roopkar was the most popular entertainment magazine in Northeast India. The advisors of the magazine were legendary singer-composer Dr Bhupen Hazarika and esteemed writer Nirode Chaudhury. In 1975, the magazine also introduced Assam’s first popular film awards, the Roopkar Awards, further cementing its influence in the regional film industry. Apart from numerous accomplished writers, the Roopkar magazine also featured contributions from a number of emerging writers. Roopkar magazine, beyond its role as a publication, significantly influenced a generation of readers by its extensive coverage of Assam’s art and culture, literary articles, and essays, while also serving as an educational resource for numerous aspiring authors in the field of cultural journalism. Roopkar was not merely a magazine; it was a fundamental pillar of Art and Literature.

In April 2025, Roopkar will be republished as an Annual Special issue to mark the publication’s 50th anniversary. This revival is being undertaken by Pallabi Borah on behalf of Roopkar Prakashan, with filmmaker and author Prodyut Kumar Deka, son of late Pabitra Kumar Deka, as the editor.

The revival of Roopkar aspires to honour its glorious past while also documenting and promoting Assamese cinema, theatre, and culture for a new generation of readers.

A new book – ‘Chinta Chayan’, authored by Reena Sharma, was formally released by Jiten Sharma at the Chandraprabha Saikiani Bhawan in Guwahati Club, recently. The release function started with the lighting of the traditional lamp by Khirada Devi. Before the book launch, Gita Devi performed a traditional Vandana. It is worth mentioning that ‘Chinta Chayan’ is the second book of author Reena Sharma.

Senior journalist Santanu Kausik Baruah, noted guest and president of greater Birkuchi Sahitya Sabha Sashadhar Deka were the keynote speakers at the book release function. All the guests, while wishing Sharma all the best for her future projects, urged her to devote herself in earnest to her literary endeavours, and keep readers engaged. Several other people also spoke on the occasion.

A number of members of the greater Birkuchi Sahitya Sabha were present at the book release function anchored by Pritima Kausik Baruah.
