Netflix has released a creepy teaser for The Haunting of Hill House Season 2, inviting fans to call Bly Manor to schedule an interview for a “live-in nanny” role.
The Haunting of Bly Manor has been shrouded in secrecy since its announcement as a follow-up series to Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House.
The Haunting Twitter page shared a photo of a “help wanted” advertisement featured inside a newspaper, which appears to be submerged underwater. “Seeking au pair for two perfectly splendid children at The Bly Manor residence,” the ad reads. “Manor is located on the English countryside. Positions begin immediately.”
A telephone number is printed directly below the vacancy for potential applicants to call to schedule an interview. However, when fans dial the number +44 1273 915253, they are greeted with a voicemail recorded by one of the Wingrave children, who explains that the “perfectly splendid” interviews will be conducted by Uncle Henry in “five days” time.
The new installment to the anthology series is based on the works of Henry James.
The Haunting of Hill House- a puzzle-like horror story built around one family’s intergenerational trauma was a hit on Netflix. Viewers devoured every episode when it debuted back in 2018, and were left hungry for more- but showrunner Mike Flanagan maintained that the writers “were happy to close the book” on the Crains.
But the show isn’t over. It’s now an anthology series, and the second season, titled The Haunting of Bly Manor, is slated to debut in the coming months.
Bly Manor is inspired by the 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw, which follows a woman who moves to an English country home to work as a governess for two orphaned children- but the pastoral setting may belie something sinister and paranormal. It won’t be a one-on-one adaptation though. Producer Trevor Macy told Vanity Fair, “You want to update the story, you want to find whatever fertile ground for elevating the character that you can in the source material, but we obviously took some liberties in updating it with a more modern setting.”
A new teaser about the upcoming horror series gives a glimpse of what’s coming our way, as the show’s official Twitter account has shared a photo of a newspaper advert calling for a live-in nanny.
Certain actors from the first installment will return but don’t expect that any Hill House characters to drop by.
Victoria Pedretti, Jenry Thomas, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, and Catherine Parker- all of whom played characters in The Haunting of Hill House- all have roles in the anthology series’ new installment. But as for their Hill House incarnations, Flanagan told TVLine, “I don’t really see a need to revisit those characters, even in cameos.”
Previously, in an interview with the Entertainment Weekly, he told that fans might see a hidden connection or two. “There’s not a narrative connection, but there are little Easter eggs, for sure, not only in small details but in moments of dialogue and in some of the ideas from Hill House,” Flagan said. “There are definitely going to be things that will set off that little dopamine rush that those kind of connections create. But it’s not a direct connection from a story point of view.
Even as a loose adaptation, The Haunting of Hill house had the weight of the one of the most important Gothic texts on its shoulders, but it delivered excellently. Its intricate storytelling and use of multiple time frames didn’t just deliver expertly choreographed scares, but also managed to be thoughtful meditation on the madness of family. The pressure of adapting ‘The Turn of The Screw’ will arguably bring greater pressure, but Flagan and his team have already proven up to the task.
