Kalank, a historical drama film was released in the theatres on 17th April, 2019. Directed by Abhishek Varman, it starred the silver screen superstars like Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Aditya Roy Kapoor. The story was set on the partition era, squeezed up with exquisitely choreographed songs, grandiose sets and gorgeous costumes.
The movie depicts love, affairs and complicated relationship among the characters. The female protagonist of the movie, ‘Roop’, played by Alia Bhatt finds love in “Zafar, the male protagonist playd by ‘Varun Dhawan’, though she was married to Dev Chaudhry, Played by Aditya Roy Kapur who was actually the husband of Satya, who was battling with Cancer. The character of Satya was played by Soakshi Sinha who had very little to do with her character.
On the other hand, Madhuri’s character as Bahar Begum from the infamous place of Husnabad was portrayed with elegance. The twist in the story came when it was revealed that ‘Zafar’ is actually not the legal son of Bahar Begum and Balraj Chaudhry played by Sanjay Dutt; father-in-law of Roop.
Bahar Begum’s dialogue in the movie, “Awaz achhi hai, lekin namak kam hai,” can be compared with the Director, Abhishek Varman. He had a story line but more emphasis was put on the grandiose set up. It seemed the passion for the story was missing.
With an IMDb rating of 3.6/10, Kalank failed to touch the hearts of the audience.
