Suniel Shetty has been conferred with the prestigious ‘Bharat Ratna Dr Ambedkar Award’ for his contribution towards the recent COVID-19 relief efforts.
The actor has been honoured for aiding the Dabbawalas of Mumbai during the coronavirus-induced lockdown.The actor had arranged for large scale food supply for the Dabbawalas who were finding it difficult to make ends meet during the pandemic.
In July, a report in Mumbai Mirror stated that Suniel joined hands with actor Sanjay Dutt and Aslam Shaikh, cabinet minister for Textiles, Port, Fisheries & & Guardian Minister-Mumbai City to help the city’s dabbawalas. In a statement, Suniel said, “It’s an initiative started by Aslam Bhai and Sanju, I had no hesitation in joining hands with them. Prema Cha Dabba becomes even more beautiful when everyone gets together.”
Suniel also told the publication that food trucks were sent to Pune, where the dabbawalas were camped through the lockdown. Kits of rice, dal, sugar, atta and oil were delivered to the camps in Khed and Malval.
