Suriya’s much-anticipated film “Kanguva,” directed by Siva and co-starring Bobby Deol and Disha Patani, premiered in theaters worldwide on November 14, 2024. Despite the hype and expectations, early reviews labeled the fantasy drama as lukewarm. On its first day, the movie reportedly amassed a worldwide gross of ₹58.62 crore. The production house celebrated the figure with a poster, claiming the film was storming box offices globally. However, contrasting reports from Sacnilk.com cited a lower figure of ₹40 crore gross, split between ₹28.50 crore in India and ₹11.50 crore overseas.

Producer KE Gnanavel Raja, who had ambitious dreams of the film hitting a ₹2000 crore mark worldwide, acknowledged during a press briefing that the opening collection fell short of expectations. Despite this, he remained optimistic, noting that the film’s performance was impressive given it premiered on a weekday. Raja expressed confidence that “Kanguva” would become Suriya’s highest-grossing film by the end of the inaugural weekend.

The reactions to “Kanguva” were mixed among fans and critics alike. While Suriya’s portrayal received widespread acclaim, criticisms were aimed at the film’s overwhelming sound design and Siva’s writing and direction. The film features a cameo by Karthi, Suriya’s brother, and concludes with a setup for a sequel, “Kanguva 2,” where the two siblings are expected to face off.

“Kanguva” was released in both 2D and 3D formats, catering to audiences in all major South Indian languages as well as Hindi. While the film’s initial reception has varied, the unique blend of visual experience and star power could potentially drive its success in the coming days.
