Legendary Flautist Deepak Sarma Passes Away at 57, Assam and Music Fraternity Mourn Profound Loss

Acclaimed flautist Deepak Sarma, revered for his soulful artistry and profound contributions to Indian classical music, passed away at a hospital in Chennai on 3rd November after a prolonged battle with liver disease. He was 57.

A disciple of the legendary Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Sarma had been undergoing advanced treatment for chronic liver disease in Chennai since last month. News of his demise has left Assam’s cultural fraternity and the wider music community in deep mourning.

Throughout his illustrious career, Deepak Sarma collaborated with some of Assam’s most celebrated icons, including Bhupen Hazarika and Zubeen Garg, and mesmerized audiences across India and abroad with his evocative flute performances. His artistry transcended borders, featuring in numerous Hindi and regional films, where his music spoke the universal language of emotion and devotion.

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya expressed profound grief over the loss, stating, “Assam has lost a distinguished musician whose contribution to Indian classical music—particularly in popularising the flute on global platforms—will be remembered for generations.” He praised Sarma’s unmatched dedication and noted that his soulful renditions had left an indelible mark on the cultural fabric of the nation.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also offered heartfelt condolences, describing the late musician as a true ambassador of Assamese music. “His immense contribution to popularising the flute and enriching Assamese musical heritage will forever be remembered. My sincere condolences to the bereaved family and well-wishers. Om Shanti,” the CM said.

Deepak Sarma’s passing marks the end of an era, but his music—imbued with depth, devotion, and grace—will continue to echo through the hearts of countless admirers for generations to come.
