Veteran Assamese actress Purabi Sarma died in Guwahati on Tuesday evening following a cardiac arrest. She was taken to a private hospital, where doctors declared her dead, and she was pronounced deceased at around 7:30 pm. A well-known name in Assamese cinema and theatre, Purabi Sarma was celebrated for her graceful performances and her decades-long association with the state’s entertainment industry. She began her film career with Ajoli Nabou, and her debut movie Ragini later won a National Award. Over the years, she appeared in several notable Assamese films, including Kanyadaan, Son Moina, Bidhata, Nayak, Ringa Ringa Mon and Porobhat (2022). She also featured in the television serial Gateway (2006) and was highly active in Assamese mobile theatre, demonstrating her versatility across multiple platforms. Purabi Sarma worked alongside many prominent figures in Assamese cinema, including Kulada Kumar Bhattacharya, and remained a regular presence in the industry for decades. She attended major cultural events such as the Filmfare Awards Assamese and the Prag Cine Awards, and also appeared with Zubeen Garg in the romantic music video Jua Bosore. She is survived by her husband, noted actor, writer and director Tapan Das. The couple was respected across the Assamese film fraternity for their lasting contribution to the arts and their long-standing creative partnership.
