
Renowned Assamese singer Samar Hazarika, the younger brother of legendary musician Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, passed away this morning at 8:45 AM at a private hospital in Guwahati. His demise has plunged the Assamese music fraternity and countless admirers across the state into deep grief.
Samar Hazarika had been battling critical health issues and was undergoing treatment in the ICU at Hayat Hospital after a sudden drop in his oxygen levels. Although his condition had shown signs of temporary improvement, it deteriorated once again, ultimately leading to his untimely death.
A distinguished figure in Assam’s musical landscape, Samar Hazarika was celebrated for his soulful voice and significant contributions to Assamese music and cinema. He began his musical journey in 1960 and gained widespread recognition in 1968 with the release of his first album, “Uttar Konwar Pratima Barua Devi.” Over the years, he recorded numerous songs, performed extensively for All India Radio, and worked as a playback singer for several acclaimed Assamese films, including Upapath, Bowari, and Prabhati Pakhi’r Gaan.
Born to Nilakanta Hazarika and Shantipriya Hazarika, Samar Hazarika belonged to a family deeply rooted in music and cultural excellence. He carried forward the illustrious legacy of his elder brothers, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Jayanta Hazarika, both towering figures in Assamese music.
He is survived by his children, Dawar and Kuwali. Samar Hazarika’s passing marks an irreparable loss to Assamese culture, but his melodious voice and artistic contributions will continue to live on in the hearts of music lovers for generations to come.
