Jaideep Ahlawat who plays the role of Hathi Ram Chaudhary, a washed-out police officer in Delhi who is put on an extremely high-profile case. Jaideep says, “It is an incredible honour to be a part of a series that does not shy away from bringing out the dark side of these uncertain times.”
Directed by Avinash Arun and Prosit Roy, ‘Paatal Lok’ is an attempt to produce a show on par with the Netflix’s Sacred Games, and to be true, Amazon Prime has unwittingly outdone itself. The series has shown an extraordinary achievement on the virtual level. Though some have compared it with the Netflix’s Sacred Games, truly speaking, ‘Paatal Lok’ is way more black hearted. The series delivered a confident step of showcasing a cop show with mythological overtones.
It drinks thirstily from the well of David Fincher’s Se7en, but the story is undoubtedly ‘bold Indian’. While it portrays New Delhi it its opening couple of episodes, Paatal Lok truly comes into its own when it turns to the beaten tracks of NH-24 and enters the badlands of Uttar Pradesh.
When you watch the series, you’ll get the feel of a city full of crowd where each one is in need of saving themselves, while the corruption keeps kissing the sky. Executive Producer Anushka Sharma has smartly collaborated with her NH10 writer Sudip Sharma, co-directed by Avinash Arun and Prosit Roy (Pari), with NH10 director Navdeep singh as ‘script consultant’.
The headfirst case of attempted assassination of a prominent journalist, Hathi Ram takes the charge to solve it. The cynical Inspector’s has a clear vision of the world as he believes that the world is divided into three realms- the ‘swarg lok’ (heaven); where gods live, in the middle is the ‘dharti lok’, where men like Hathi Ram and Imran live, and the bottol is the ‘paatal lok’. The hell from which vermin occasionally escape and wreak havoc above. Hathi Ram says, “Waise to yeh shastron mein likha tha, par maine WhatsApp pe padha.”
The series is an intense and in-depth exploration of the Indian immorality, but also a celebration of our ingenuity. The reviews by the audience gives a green light to this Amazon Prime series for being a successful one.
