Lyricist Yogesh, who wrote Kahin door jab din dhal jaaye, no more

Hindi film lyricist Yogesh, passed away at a friend’s residence on the outskirts of Mumbai city on Friday morning at the age of 77.

Fellow lyricist Amit Khanna, who shared album-space with him in Baton Baton Mein, points out that Yogesh “was one of the few who chose to write primarily in Hindi at a time when a majority of lyricists were Urdu poets. The way he used the language showed his command over his craft.” He adds, “Lucknow-born, he carried grace in his personal life and poetry.”

Music historian Pavan Jha said, “His poetry was easy flowing, literary and deep. He belonged to the lyrical school of Shailendra.”

Yogesh made his debut in Sakhi Robin (1962), Tum jo aao to pyaar aa jaaye. But it was the songs he wrote for Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anand (1970) that earned him fame. In a career spanning over five decades, Yogesh Gaud wrote for over 50 films.

The songs wrote by him are still very popular and music lovers continue to hum his songs. He always found the perfect words to express feelings. Though he is no more with us, he will always remain with us through his songs.
