Good news in store for Assamese music. An Assamese song shines in an international film competition! On March 9, the Swami Vivekananda Hall in Kolkata hosted the 5th International Star Film Festival. This year’s festival commemorates the centenary of renowned music director Salil Chowdhury, and in addition to the award ceremony, the audience was captivated by his golden songs and dance performances.
This year’s event featured 65 countries and 290 awards in 47 categories. The Assamese song “Roon Jhoon Jhoon”, which features Dr. Aparna Buzarbarua’s lyrics, melody, music arrangement, and music direction, has won the Best Music Video award at the festival, which is a source of joy. The song also earned Dr. Aparna Buzarbarua the prestigious Salil Chowdhury Award for Best Music Director at the festival. The song is rendered by Dr. Sangita Kakati and features the beautiful dance of Meghranjani Medhi. The song video, which was directed by Antareep Hazarika, has already received four awards.
Born and brought up in a culturally enriching environment in Tezpur, Dr Aparna Buzarbarua started her illustrious career as a Botany teacher at the Cotton College in 1969, and remained there till she retired as the Head of the Deptt in 2003. Dr Buzarbarua, who has composed over 100 songs, collaborating with diverse eminent lyricists from the state, has a rare distinction of being the first recognized female music director of AIR Guwahati in the year 2008. She has also authored a number of books. The music director said that this award is really encouraging news for Assam’s music scene.
