As reported by a premier news group, Assamese singer and composer Nilotpal Bora recently took to Facebook to criticize the creators of ‘Raghav’ for including a Maharashtrian instrument as a representation of Assamese culture. Bora shed light on the presence of the Puneri Dhol, a folk instrument of Maharashtra, in the teaser. The instrument holds cultural significance in Maharashtra during festivals such as Dahi Handi and Ganesh Chaturthi, where hundreds of drums come together in joyous celebration. Bora’s Facebook post, shared on August 3, highlighted how such portrayals can lead to misconceptions and present a threat to the authenticity of Assamese culture.

Bora expressed concern about instances where elements from other cultures are incorrectly depicted as part of the Assamese culture in movies. He lamented the influence of successful films from different languages, which may prompt directors to incorporate elements that do not belong to Assamese tradition in their movies. Bora emphasized the need for originality in storytelling, urging filmmakers to showcase genuine Assamese culture, stories, and characters without resorting to imitation. In Bora’s view, this is not an impossible task but requires intelligence and creativity.

Taking a broader perspective, Bora called attention to the significance of Assam’s own cultural achievements, such as the record-breaking performance of 10,000 Bihu dancers during the last Bohag festival. He expressed disappointment in witnessing others imitating Bihu in movies produced outside of Assam. Bora stressed the importance of preserving and promoting Assamese culture while also maintaining a thriving movie industry.

It is worth mentioning that ‘Raghav’ is an action-packed entertainment film that revolves around the emotional journey of a taxi driver. Directed by Jatin Bora and produced by Nabanita Sharma, the movie is set to hit cinemas on October 27 2023. Alongside Jatin Bora and Nishita Goswami, distinguished actress Mridula Baruah also features prominently in the lead roles.

Rupaliparda.com wishes the team Raghav all the best for the days to come.
