Rima Das, an acclaimed filmmaker from Assam with a National Award to her name, has been invited to join the prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This honor places her among 487 artists and executives worldwide who have been acknowledged this year. This invitation represents a notable achievement for a filmmaker from the Northeast region of India. As an Academy member, Das will participate in various crucial activities, including voting for the Oscars. She joins a distinguished group of Indian invitees, including actor Shabana Azmi, director SS Rajamouli, cinematographer Ravi Varman, director Anand Kumar Tucker, costume designers Rama Rajamouli and Sheetal Sharma, documentary filmmakers Nisha Pahuja and Hemal Trivedi, producer Ritesh Sidhwani, and choreographer Prem Rakshith. A self-taught filmmaker, Das previously had her film “Village Rockstars” submitted as India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars in 2019. Her recent work, “Tora’s Husband,” has also garnered international acclaim and won five awards at the Filmfare Awards Assamese 2024.
