Nipon Goswami, The Polestar of Assamese Cinema passes away at 80.

Nipon Goswami, The Eminent film and theatre artiste passed away on Thursday, 27 October 2022 after suffering from prolonged heart-related Ailment.

Goswami who made his acting debut as a child artist in the film ‘Piyoli Phukan’ was born on 3rd September 1942 at Kolibari, Tezpur, Assam. His father Chandradhar Goswami was a famous actor and his mother Nirupama Goswami was a singer.

After his graduation, Nipon joined Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in the year 1965 and was contemporary of actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha, director Subhash Ghai and actor Navin Nischal.

He started his acting career as a stage actor and was actively involved in mobile theatres, notably, Abaahan, Kohinoor, Hengul, and Shakuntala. He also appeared in few television serials like Writu aahe writu jaai’. Later he established himself as a film actor. His first Assamese film ‘Sangram’ in lead role was a Hit. His next movie ‘Dr. Bezbaruah’, a superhit, bought him laurels.

His stardom and versatile acting sustained him in Film Industry for 48 long years and delivering more than 49 Assamese films and 8 Hindi Films. He is known for his exemplary work in Dr. Bezbaruah (1970), Mukuta (1970), Maanab Aru Daanab (1971), Morisika (1972), Brishti (1974), Sandhya Raag (1977), Ajoli Nabou (1980), Ghar Sangsar (1983), Kokadeuta Naati Aru Haati (1983, Siraj (1988), Bukur Majot Jowle (1999), Deutar Biya (1997), Hiya Diya Niya (2000), Jon Jwole Kopalat (2000), Mitha Mitha Logonot (2002) etc. Apart from Assamese films, Goswami is also known for his prominent work in Hindi films, Daman, Kaal Sandhya and Virodhi.

Expressing his grief Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi said “Saddened by the passing away of Shri Nipon Gowami, who made a pioneering contribution to the Assamese film industry. His diverse works will be remembered by serveral film lovers. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti”

Dr. Himanta Biwsa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam wrote on twitter “Assamese Film Industry lost an evergreen Actor. I am really saddened by the news of him passing away. I was fortunate to have worked with him in my childhood in the film Kokadeuta Nati aaru Hati.”

Union Minister Shri Sarbananda said “The polestar of Assamese cinema is no more. Deeply saddened to learn about the demise of veteran actor Nipon Goswami. A star since the 1960s, Nipon da had captivated the hearts of audience and his death brings an end to a golden era.”

Keshab Mahanta, Minister Health & Family Welfare, Information Technology, Science and Technology. Government of Assam wrote on twitter “Devastated with the news of veteran actor Nipon Goswami passing away. He will always be remembered for his great body of work and portraying various roles reflecting the people of Assam on the silver screen. My deepest condolences to his family and well wishers. Prayers.”
