“Heartfelt Farewell to Folk Legend: Sharda Sinha’s Immortal Legacy”
Legendary folk singer and Padma Bhushan awardee, Sharda Sinha, has passed away at the age of 72 due to complications related to cancer. Admitted to AIIMS Delhi, where she was receiving treatment for multiple myeloma since October 25, the celebrated artist succumbed to refractory shock caused by septicemia while on a ventilator. Her son shared a heartfelt message, expressing gratitude for the love and prayers that will forever accompany his mother.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Sinha, recognizing her as a supremely talented musician whose songs, especially those associated with the Chhath festival, will resonate eternally. He described her passing as an irreplaceable loss to the music world. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh echoed these sentiments, highlighting her role in popularizing Bhojpuri music and mourning the void her passing leaves in folk music. Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed his sorrow, reflecting on her five-decade-long contribution to Indian music and dubbing her the “Bihar Kokila.”
Throughout her illustrious career, Sinha was a vocal powerhouse in Maithili, Bhojpuri, and Magahi songs, with her performances integral to Chhath festivities. Her fame extended to Bollywood, contributing melodies to hit films like “Maine Pyar Kiya” and “Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.” Notably, her track “Taar Bijli” from “Gangs of Wasseypur” became a fan favorite.
Recognized with numerous accolades, Sinha received the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, along with the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, reflecting her immense cultural impact. Tragically, her passing follows closely on the heels of her husband’s death from a brain hemorrhage, shortly after the couple celebrated their 54th anniversary.
Sharda Sinha’s demise marks the end of an era in Indian folk music, but her musical legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
